01

Not the Fastest Guy on the Ride

Before he coached cyclists, Menachem was a powerlifter. As a teenager, he won natural powerlifting titles and was named Best Lifter at a 2002 competition across all ages and weight classes.

Cycling came later, and it didn't come easy. He raced as an amateur for years, usually somewhere in the middle or back of the pack. He picked up a few wins on flat and rolling courses, but climbing was never his strength.

What he did get good at was riding smart. Many of the athletes he coached were stronger than he was, so he learned to stay on their wheels with good positioning, careful pacing, and knowing when to save energy.

That lesson still shapes how he coaches. Performance isn't only about more watts. It's about using what you have.

02

Learning the Body From Every Angle

Menachem earned his B.S. in Exercise Science, with a minor in Coaching, from the University of Pittsburgh. While there, he worked inside Pitt's nationally ranked Division I men's basketball program and interned with Pitt Strength & Conditioning across a wide range of Olympic sports.

He also worked as the in-house strength coach at a physical therapy clinic, helping people bridge the gap between finishing rehab and actually being ready for the activities they loved. Later, he worked as an exercise physiologist in a hospital bariatric surgery program with roughly 250 to 325 patients, and spent more than two years working as an EMT.

Those jobs taught him something most cycling coaches never learn: injury history, recovery, stress, and age aren't side notes. They're part of the plan.

03

Building Riders From the Ground Up

In 2008, Menachem started his coaching business and became head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Cycling program. He helped turn a loosely organized student club into a structured, year-round team that won three straight conference championships and sent riders to the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships year after year.

Many of his riders started near the beginning. Andrew Seitz went from Cat. 5 to Cat. 1 in about four years. Esther Meisels, whom he began coaching when she first started riding a road bike, went on to race in Europe and signed a UCI professional contract.

04

Coaching at the Highest Level

From 2021 to 2026, Menachem led strength and conditioning for the Israel Track Cycling Program across its Junior, U23, and Elite riders. During his tenure, program athletes earned top-10 finishes at World and European Championships and Israel's first Junior European track medal, as part of a full coaching and performance team.

He has also coached athletes who were already world-class, including Olympic triathlete Shachar Sagiv and Olympic silver medalist Mikhail Yakovlev, who finished 5th in both the sprint and keirin at the 2025 UCI Track World Championships while working with him.

05

Teaching Other Coaches

Menachem created the Strength Training for Cyclists Certification to teach coaches his approach. He has taught coach education for USA Cycling, including at the 2018 USA Cycling Coaching Summit, created two courses for TrainingPeaks University, and gave keynote talks at the Science & Cycling Conference in 2021 and 2023.

He has written for TrainingPeaks, PEZCycling News, and road.cc, has contributed to or been featured in Bicycling, Triathlete, and Men's Health, and hosts The Strong Savvy Cyclist & Triathlete podcast, now around 200 episodes.

06

Who He Coaches Today

Competitive riders over 40 have a harder problem than young racers. They have less time, recover more slowly, and have bodies with some history. Solving that takes more than a training plan.

Some of Menachem's longest coaching relationships have been with high performers outside of cycling, including a physician who returned to racing and worked with him for nearly a decade, and a surgeon who trained for multi-day mountain bike races while managing a knee injury.

Today, he helps competitive riders like them get stronger, race smarter, and keep improving season after season.
